The Ponce Condominiums have a fascinating history that dates back to their opening in August 1913. Designed by renowned architect William Stoddart, The Ponce was constructed as Atlanta's first high-rise luxury apartment building. Situated in a neighborhood filled with mansions, The Ponce stood out with its Beaux Arts and Italianate architectural style. Across the street from the new apartment building was Stoddart's previous design, The Georgian Terrace hotel, adding to the architectural charm of the area.
At its grand opening, The Ponce boasted a lobby finished in Caen stone and Formosa marble, setting the tone for the luxury experience it offered. The ground floor featured a private telephone exchange, a ladies' rest room, a cloakroom, and a cafeteria. The building included a variety of apartment options, from large housekeeping suites with multiple bedrooms and baths to bachelor suites with en suite bathrooms or shared facilities.
The modern conveniences of the time were incorporated into the design of The Ponce, including mechanical refrigerators in each housekeeping suite kitchen, a central vacuum system, and central ventilation providing fresh air drawn down from the roof. The rooftop terrace garden, intended to replace traditional southern yard gardens, became a popular gathering spot for the social elite in Atlanta.
In 1932, Peggy Oliver created Atlanta's first penthouse apartment atop The Ponce, bringing a modern sensibility to the space with vibrant colors, custom-made furniture, and a mix of Moderne and country-style decor. Over the years, the penthouse has been home to a variety of interesting residents, each adding their own unique touch to the space.
The Ponce was converted into condominiums in 1982, preserving its historical charm while offering exclusive residences to its residents. The building's rich history, unique design, and prime location make The Ponce Condominiums a coveted place to call home in Atlanta. Today, the building stands as a testament to Atlanta's architectural heritage and continues to be a cherished landmark in the city.
